The Hype of Emerging Technologies
With all the hype surrounding emerging technologies and the impact these will have on jobs in all sectors, it is understandable that for many, the technological led change is viewed with suspicion at best and disinterest at worst. The one thing for certain is the old adage of "adapt or die" and with the well publicised advances in AI, AR, Blockchain and 4D printing amongst others, the aviation sector is understandably keeping a close eye on developments.
For example, Blockchain has enormous potential for MRO activity through the ability to show a complete nose-to-tail configuration of an aircraft, to streamline lease returns and increase efficiencies in the supply of parts. However, what is often missed in the debate is despite the pace of change, there is a time lag before full adoption and during this time, the industry continues to grow with a thirst for increasing numbers of engineers, technicians and pilots to keep up with this growth. Gartner's Hype Cycle for 2018 (reproduced below) articulates this succinctly with a time horizon of 5-10 years before most of the game changers become mainstream.
Make no mistake, the disruption to the industry will be extensive and organistions that fail to adapt will fall behind as the pace of change accelerates. The same is true of those wishing to "future proof" their careers and those who believe their position is safe should pay heed to a Dell report in 2017 that 85% of jobs in 2030 have not yet been invented. That is a lot of new jobs in only12 years!! This undoubtedly opens up huge opportunities for both current and future workforces.
Working with partners who understand the strategic changes driving the industry, together with providing solutions on how to tackle some of the staffing issues that the next 5-10 years will unearth will be vital. If you are a client or a candidate that is starting to look at these developments seriously and need additional advice, our team at Lupos Global are well positioned to help navigate some of the exciting times ahead.
